On an Wing and a Prayer
Reflections of Deeside's changing habitat
“On a Wing and a Prayer” – doing something in the hope that you will succeed despite being insufficiently prepared.” Taking this figure of speech as a starting point for humankind’s approach to the climate crisis, Nordic Viola’s Katherine Wren enters into a musical conversation with Aberdeenshire composers Pete and Joe Stollery on the changing ecology of Deeside. Together they explore the aftermath of Storm Frank around Glen Quoich as well as the changing ecology of our woodlands and wetlands. Creating new music through improvisation, composition and field recording and also featuring original music by Icelandic resident Charles Ross and traditional music from Deeside, they celebrate the beauty and diversity of this wild place and its ability to adapt and renew itself in the face of severe weather events. They offer a prayer for its preservation and a more harmonious existence between humankind and the natural world.
