British Art Song
Join friends and colleagues Anna Hamilton, Ian Lovegrove, and Megan Cormack for a delightful recital of British Art Song. The program features vocal works by Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry, Ivor Gurney, Roger Quilter, and Benjamin Britten, showcasing the lyrical beauty and emotional depth of this repertoire.
The recital will also include an organ performance of Psalm Prelude by Herbert Howells.
Ian Lovegrove grew up in Ilfracombe where he began leaning the piano at the age of six and the organ aged thirteen. He graduated from Bath College of Higher Education with a B.A. (Hons.) in music, as part of which time he studied organ with Peter King at Bath Abbey. After a period as a demonstration recitalist for a computer organ company in Weston-Super-Mare he spent sixteen happy years based in Minehead, Somerset as organist, choirmaster and ‘Parish Musician’. Ian also taught piano and keyboard to many pupils in a number of schools and privately. In June 2007 Ian moved to Aberdeen to take up a post as Piano Instructor for Aberdeen City Council, a role in which he continues. He was accompanist for the Deesisde Choristers; he contributes regularly to the music of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Aberdeen and St. James’ Church, Stonehaven. He has performed regularly with Aberdeen City Council guitar instructor Conall McKay at venues in Scotland, England and the Irish Republic.
Anna Hamilton was born in Elgin, studied music at Aberdeen University and gained her teaching qualifications at the Northern College. Currently working for Aberdeen City Council Instrumental Music Service and studying singing at NESMs with Gillian Jack. She is also a member of the Aberdeen Gilbert & Sullivan Society and has recently joined the Bach Choir.
Megan R Cormack is a multi-instrumentalist and educator originally from the West Coast of Scotland and now living in the North East. Moving to Aberdeen to study music at Aberdeen University, Megan went on to teach for Aberdeen City Council Instrumental Music Service while continuing to perform with string quartet ‘Thistle Quartet’, ceilidh function band ‘Reel McCoy’ and helping to set up group ‘Ceol na Mara’. In her spare time, Megan enjoys seeing what other musical mischief she can get up to such as joining the house band for Niel Selbie and the Keltic Kru who often raise money for charity, and depping in for shows like ‘Spirit of Scotland’ in Edinburgh.
Megan, Anna and Ian are looking forward to performing together and hope you enjoy their programme of British Art Song.
The St Andrews Cathedral at Noon Recital Series runs every week, 52 weeks of the year. Over the many years it has been running, it has hosted some outstanding local talent alongside regular visiting musicians. Performances can vary from solo instruments (recently including organ, piano, violin and bassoon!) to larger groups such as string orchestras and choirs. You can expect a wide range of styles from early Renaissance all the way through to modern experimental music. The recitals are free and short, and are followed by tea, coffee and biscuits. Donations to the Cathedral funds are gratefully received.
