Far and Away
Come and celebrate The Tallships Races with Aberdeen Sinfonietta In Far and Away – the most exciting concert this season!
Experience the sea in all its moods from the reflective En Bateau casting off Debussy’s Petite Suite, to the Sea Pictures by Edward Elgar whose enchanting settings of English pastoral poems delight the ear:
With short, sharp, violent lights made vivid,
To southward far as the sight can roam,
Only the swirl of the surges livid,
The seas that climb and the surfs that comb. (The Swimmer)
Dive with Aberdeen Sinfonietta into the brine!
The contrasting Sea Interludes from the opera Peter Grimes, centre on an isolated little fishing village. They are wonderful evocations of the early nineteenth century narrative by George Crabbe. A dark portrayal of gossip, communal fear, and the persecution of an individual by society. This turbulent opera and its interludes reflect the challenges that Britten and Peter Pears, his partner and muse, suffered in their own lives.
Although our Far and Away concert takes its name from John Williams and Ron Howard’s epic tale of immigration across the Atlantic, Aberdeen Sinfonietta is very excited to look hamewards too in the world premiere of ‘The Coast’ by our own young composer, Clara-Jane Maunder who plays violin in the orchestra! Sail with us Far and Away (and back again!)
Conductor Garry Walker at the helm!
