Gian Vito Tannoia

Born in a family of musicians, Gian Vito Tannoia starts off at 5 with the practice of the accordion with his father Sandro, who brought him to succeed in the most important national and international accordion (Bayan)competitions.

At 14 he approaches also the organ practice; solo Italian finalist organ player at the Pražské jaro in Prague (1989, chairing H. Haselböck) and at the Dublin International Organ Competition (1995, chairing Ph. Lefebvre), he was awarded the first prize at the International Course of Improvisation (chairing J. Galard) and the second prize at the National Competition of Italian Ancient Organ at Rodi Garganico (chairing L. Celeghin).

Considered a musician with a comprehensive background thanks to his musicological studies (Laurea – Italian degree in Literature, top mark “cum Laude” and Theology degree) and music studies (diplomas in accordion, organ and organ composition), Gian Vito Tannoia specialised with Tagliavini, Radulescu, Salvatori Vogel, Planyavsky, Saorgin, Hakim, Essl, Klinda-Musikhochschule in Munich). He also studied composition with Teresa Procaccini (Rome).

In 2004 the music critic of the “Main Post” praised his amazing musicality. Even Petr Eben, well renowned composer, congratulated with Gian Vito in 1989 with personally dedicated written words, after his unique interpretation of Laudes in Prague.

Prestigious symphonic and chamber orchestras appreciate his talent: Synphony Orchestra of India (Mumbai), Orquesta Sinfónica Municipal de Caracas, Orchestra da Camera di Ravenna, Moldovan State Television Orchestra. Gian Vito is regularly called to perform in rehearsals and concerts on famous organs in Asia (e.g. Tata-Theatre of Mumbai–India, St. Saviour in Jerusalem), Europe (e.g. London Westmister Cathedral, Hamburg-Boizemburg, Würzburg, Farnborough, Barcelona, Paris, Warsaw) and America.

Currently, as accordion player, he performs his own compositions (concert n. 1, 2 and 3 both in “solo” version and with symphonic or chamber orchestra) playing an instrument specifically designed and built for him by Zonta (Bielorussia).

He published books, essays, organ compositions and lectures in various Universities (e.g. Evora, Portugal;  Caracas, Venezuela and  Lateranenses, Roma/Vaticano).  He performed the integral organ works of Messiaen, Liszt and Mozart.  He passionately teaches at the Music School (Conservatorio) of Matera where he is coordinator of the academic courses (he won the national competition for the school chair in 1990, after examination in Trieste) and he is “Catedrático de Honor” at the Universidad Católica de Caracas (Venezuela).
